Melbourne, Australia City Skate
Every Wednesday night at 9:00pm, inline skaters from around Melbourne, join together at the Melbourne Art Center in Melbourne, Victoria (Australia) and skate through the city. It's been going on for AT LEAST 13 years (that I know of) and still gets regular skaters every week.
Follow up:
CitySkate celebrated it's bigger numbers during the inline skate boom during the 90s when it would routinely get 150 attendees.
Today, while it's not what it once was, still has a number of die hard fans attending every week (such as myself). Other people come and go, perhaps opting only for once a month skating adventures, or even just four times a year. These days, on any given night you can expect half a dozen.
City Skate is not owned or operated by any single person which causes it to be influenced and swayed by different people at different points in time. Because no one person has control over it, City Skate tends to take on a life of it's own.
There is also another event being run on every second Tuesday now, called Adventure Skate. It involves going to a different location each week and is usually (despite the name) an easier skate than the City Skate, and more picturesque.
To attend City Skate, you only need a pair of skates. They don't even have to be Inlines if you're more comfortable on traditional skates - all are welcome. Of course many City Skaters wear helmets, knee-pads, elbow-pads, wrist guards and various other types of protection so feel free to protect yourself too!
It's probably a good idea if you know how to slow down/stop on skates but it's not absolutely necessary. You can get by using the walls and other areas of the environment around you. The route tents to adapt to the individuals attending so you'll generally be OK no matter what your skill level.
If you are an experienced skater, there's still a good time to be had. City Skate moves through the City, which provides you with plenty nice downhill runs as well as stairs to ride, and things to jump.
